Using AI to Tailor Your CV (Without Getting Caught)

AI can speed up tailoring — but keyword stuffing and generic AI output will destroy your credibility. Here's a 15-minute workflow that works.

Don't maintain five parallel CVs — they rot. Instead, keep one master CV (a long private document with every role, project, metric, and bullet you've ever written) and generate targeted versions with a repeatable workflow.

The 15-minute tailoring workflow

1. Read the job description; underline the top 5 requirements the employer clearly cares about most.
2. From your master CV, select the bullets that best prove those 5 things; drop bullets that don't serve this application.
3. Rewrite the summary line to mirror the role title and top requirement.
4. Reorder skills so the JD's must-haves appear first.
5. Run a keyword mirror pass — if the JD says "stakeholder management" and you wrote "client coordination," change it (if truthful).

Where AI helps — and hurts

Helps: Drafting alternate phrasings, spotting missing keywords, restructuring bullets into XYZ format.

Hurts: Generating fake metrics, producing buzzword soup, or creating a CV that sounds nothing like you.

Always read the output aloud. If you couldn't defend every line in an interview, don't submit it. Recruiters spot AI-generated fluff instantly — and it destroys credibility faster than a typo.
