Match the JD, Then Tailor the CV (Without Inventing a Career)
CareerGru's CV vs JD match, Honest Tailor, and cover letter are one workflow: see the gaps, rewrite only from what is true, then write a letter from the same evidence.
Pasting a job description into a chatbot and asking it to "make my CV fit" is how people get caught. The model will happily add Kubernetes, a 40% metric, and a leadership claim you cannot walk into a room with.
CareerGru's match-and-tailor flow is the opposite bet. First we tell you, honestly, how this CV sits against *this* JD. Then we rewrite using only what you have actually done. Then we can draft a cover letter from the same match, not from a blank page of adjectives.
Step 1: CV vs JD
You paste (or reuse) a CV and a job description. The match report is not a green light to apply. It is a call: apply, prep, or hold, plus the terms you already cover, the ones that are close, and the ones that are missing.
Missing does not always mean "you are unqualified." Sometimes the work is on the CV under different words (client coordination vs stakeholder management). Sometimes it is adjacent experience you can frame without claiming the missing skill. Sometimes it is a real gap. A CV cannot fake reinforcement learning. A weekend of basics and an honest cover-letter line might still be the grown-up move.
The score on a match is guidance for *this pairing*. A new JD is the only honest way to see a new number. We will not guess it after you tailor.
Step 2: Honest Tailor
If you generate a tailored CV, CareerGru asks about the gaps that matter, then shows a plan: what we will add from your answers, what we will align to the JD's wording, what we will leave off.
Leave-off is a feature. If you have not used Terraform, we do not write Terraform. Docker can stay as the closest true evidence. That is the whole product in one sentence.
Placeholders such as [X] are for *your* numbers. Fill them. If you cannot, leave the claim off. Generating spends credits; the tailored CV is saved to your library so a refresh does not throw away paid work. Exporting the file is a separate step (ATS-safe .docx and .pdf).
> [!mistake]
> Asking any model to "add the JD keywords" and submitting the first draft.
> [!fix]
> Run the match. Confirm only the experience you can defend. Generate. Read every line aloud. Then export.
Step 3: Cover letter from the match
A cover letter built from the match report starts with your actual strengths and transferable evidence, not "I am writing to express my strong interest." That is the same honesty rule as the CV: specific, short, editable.
Use a letter when the story needs a paragraph the CV cannot hold (a switch, a gap, why this team). Skip it when the ATS has no field and the company will never open the file. If you do write one, rewrite the first and last sentences yourself. Those carry your voice.
What this is not
It is not a guarantee you will be shortlisted. Hiring is on the employer. It is not a license to invent. And it is not a substitute for reading the JD. The tools make the slow parts faster. You still have to be the person in the interview.
If you want the full loop: CV Check for the baseline, CV vs JD for the role, tailor plus letter for the send, tracker for what happens next.
